Herpes is a common viral infection that affects many people. There are two types of herpes: Herpes-Zoster and Herpes-Simplex.

Oral herpes causes cold sores and blisters around the mouth area, whilst genital herpes causes sores and blisters around the genital region. Both types of viruses can be very painful.

Unfortunately, once you contract herpes, it's with you for your whole lifetime. You will get long periods of time when the virus lies dormant, however there will be other times when your blisters and sores (wherever they are), will be highly infectious.

One in five people have genital herpes, and many of them are not aware they have developed the virus as only a fourth of the estimated 50 million infected people in America alone experience any symptoms. As it is easily sexually transmitted, genital herpes is classed as a sexually transmitted disease

If you contract the genital virus, you will probably suffer five to eight outbreaks a year. These normally run ten to fourteen days per outbreak.

Medical treatment for herpes concentrates on relieving symptoms and pain. One of the better drugs in the fight against this virus is Acyclovir. This can reduce or eliminate 90% of all outbreaks if taken as prescribed. However if Acyclovir isn't used as soon as an outbreak is suspected, its effectiveness is reduced.

Some ways of staying as comfortable as possible when suffering an outbreak includes

* Keeping your blisters clean and dry
* Ensuring all surrounding areas of blisters are kept clean and free from irritants
* If facial herpes, wear as little makeup as possible
* Use your own cup to drink from.

If the they are genital,

* Keep blisters clean and dry
* Shower daily with mild soap and water (Or just water alone)
* Take a soothing hot bath with no added irritants.
* Wear loose fitting clothing
* Take non prescriptive pain killers
* Abstain from sexual intercourse
* If abstinence is not practical, ensure the male wears a condom.

Even if no blisters are apparent, the virus may still be active, so wearing a condom (especially if this is a new partner), offers some amount of protection from the virus.

Symptoms of genital herpes include
* Fever
* Headache
* Swollen Lymph glands
* Abnormal vaginal discharge
