Genital herpes is caused by the same virus that causes cold sores, so it is really important if anyone is showing facial herpes symptoms or suffering from a cold sore, they do not touch their genitals without washing their hands first, and also that any direct contact with the cold sore is avoided.

Herpes symptoms usually develop within two to twenty days and can vary from being very intense and painful to being so mild, that they are practically unnoticeable.

Much of how severe the herpes symptoms are depends on how effective a person's immunity is. If their immunity levels are low, then a person is more liable to have the more severe herpes symptoms than a person whose immunity levels are at a reasonable level.

Once the herpes virus enters the human system, it reproduces itself and starts to multiply. Eventually the skin shows signs of attack from the virus resulting in blisters, bumps and swollen reddened areas.

Other symptoms include

* Itching
* Burning
* Blisters
* Fever
* Muscular aching
* Swollen lymph glands
* Headaches
* Vaginal or penile discharge (if it is genital herpes)

Subsequent herpes symptoms after the first attack are usually much shorter and less severe than the initial attack, and eventually they decrease in their severity and frequency over a period of time.

One major problem with genital herpes is that some people do not exhibit any herpes symptoms when they have an outbreak; however they are still very infectious. This means they are more liable to infect other people because they may not be taking adequate precautions and practicing safe sex.

If a person is prone to herpes, then they should always ensure especially when meeting new partners that they take adequate sexual precautions. They may not be exhibiting any herpes symptoms, but they could unwittingly infect their new partner with the herpes virus especially if they do not realize they are undergoing a herpes outbreak.

Once the lesions and other herpes symptoms have subsided, the herpes victim can still suffer a herpes type pain called post-herpetic neuralgia. This can be evident in all types of herpes, and is a classic herpes symptom.
