The Herpes simplex virus is highly contagious and can cause outbreaks on any part of the body.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus, type 1 and type 2.

Type 1 is usually associated with outbreaks of blisters and cold sores around the lips mouth and other facial areas and fever blisters inside the mouth. This virus is usually transmitted via contamination from infected fingers which have touched the infected blisters or contaminated saliva. Kissing is also another highly infectious way of transmitting the virus, and will transmit the virus very easily from one person to another.

Outbreaks of the herpes simplex virus can vary, between weeks months and even years. Those with a poor immune system are more likely to suffer outbreaks than those people who have a robust immune system. However it needs to be remembered that even though outbreaks may be infrequent, the virus stays in the body indefinitely.

By the time adulthood has been reached it is thought that approximately 90% of people will have manufactured antibodies against the herpes simplex one strain.

Herpes simplex type 2 is usually associated with genital herpes and mainly transmitted sexually. Symptoms of type 2 herpes simplex include genital ulcers or sores as well as oral sores lesions and ulcers. The virus if left untreated can also lead to other diseases such as meningoencephalitis, and eye infections.

Many people who are infected with the type 1 and 2 herpes simplex virus do not exhibit any symptoms, this can be a real problem because then the virus is spread much more rapidly as the sufferers do not take adequate precautions as needed.

Any person who has a history of the herpes simplex virus should always ensure they take sensible sexual precautions, especially if sleeping with a new partner. Even those people who do not have a history of herpes simplex infection should always be sensible when considering a sexual relationship with a new partner, and establish any sexual illnesses their new partner may have experienced. They should also be open and honest about any problems such as suffering from the herpes simplex virus they themselves have.
