There are two types of the herpes simplex virus, these are type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2).

Both types of the herpes simplex virus cause similar types of blistering and lesions etc but type 1 is usually found in the mouth and around the lips and other parts of the face, whilst type 2 is usually to be found infecting the genital regions and is classed as a sexually transmitted disease.

The actual symptoms of both types of the herpes simplex virus are very similar.

Type 1 herpes simplex virus is usually acquired in childhood, and many people grow up suffering the very familiar symptoms of cold sores around and inside the mouth, fever blisters inside the mouth and the very painful rash and blistering to the face and around the eyes. Only a very small percentage of the type 1 herpes simplex virus is ever found to be infecting the genital regions of sufferers.

Occasionally the simplex virus will leave a residual pain long after the rash and blistering has disappeared which is known as post herpetic pain.

As stated the herpes simplex virus type 2 is usually associated with infection and outbreaks in the genital area. When an outbreak of type 2 is experienced, the victim will suffer genital blistering, ulcers, sores and cankers.

The first outbreak of genital herpes caused by the herpes simplex virus is usually the worst attack. This can be very debilitating for the sufferer and it can take them up to four weeks to recover from the outbreak.

Luckily though any subsequent outbreak is rarely as problematic as this first outbreak and many people find they suffer only minor symptoms such as occasional blistering which appear around the genitals and rectum. Many people also find that as they get older the outbreaks from the herpes simplex virus gradually decrease as do the intensity of any symptoms experienced.

It's worth noting though that even though the episodes decrease in intensity and pain over a period of time, people with the herpes simplex virus are still highly infectious if they are in an acute stage.
