There is no actual herpes cure available, only the means to treat the symptoms as they appear. This is because once the herpes virus enters the body, it stays there for many years, hopefully mostly dormant, but with either frequent or infrequent outbreaks as a persons health determines.

However even though there is no herpes cure, the symptoms can be treated, and one of the best treatments offered is oral antiviral medications, such as Zovirax (acyclovir), Famvir (famciclovir) and Valtrex (valacyclovir). Some of these medications can also be used topically to treat the blisters and ulcers formed by the herpes virus.

All medications mentioned above treat the virus by reducing the efficiency of the virus reproducing itself in the nerves. However what many people fail to realize is the treatment must be started within 24-48 hours of the symptoms manifesting, or in other words, the sooner the better. Otherwise the treatment doesn't work or at best will only have a limited effect.

There has been much research undertaken into a herpes cure, but though no cure has actually been found, there have been considerable breakthroughs by pharmaceutical companies in the search for effective treatments against both the physical symptoms of herpes and the pain which includes pain suffered whilst experiencing an outbreak and also the post herpetic pain suffered by many people.

Many people who experience a herpes outbreak go on to suffer extra pain long after their blisters and rash has healed. This is called Post herpetic pain and is a chronic pain (As opposed to acute pain), which originates in the nerve cells where the attack of shingles developed.

Post herpetic pain can cause people untold misery. Pain associated with the herpes outbreak is usually short lived, manageable and treatable. However post herpetic pain is very difficult to treat, and with no hope of a herpes cure on the horizon, for many people the outlook is bleak.

Some people find post herpetic pain so debilitating that it physically incapacitates them, finding what pain relief works for one person does not necessarily work for another. It is also noticed that older people are more susceptible to post herpetic pain. A herpes cure cannot come fast enough for these people.
